What is Skid Steer?
A Skid Steer is an engine-powered machine with attached lift arms. The lift arms are used to attach a wide variety of labor-saving tools or attachments. It is small in size with a rigid frame and four vehicles.
In Skid-steer loaders, four-wheel vehicles are mechanically locked in synchronization on each side. And the left-side drive wheels can be driven independently of the right-side drive wheels.
It can sometimes be used in place of the large excavator for digging out the holes from inside. The skid loader first digs a ramp leading to the edge of the desired excavation. It then uses the ramp to carry material out of the hole. The skid loader reshapes the ramp making it steeper and longer as the excavation deepens.

How to Operate a Skid Steer?
You have to follow these simple steps to operate a Bobcat Skid Steer.
#1.Steps involved to start-up the Skid Steer
- At first, you have to enter into the machine by using the handles located on the front of the cab.
- Then Pull the safety roll cage down.
- After that turn the key one position to the right and listen for the beep.
- Then from the upper left corner turn the parking brake off by pushing the toggle switch to the off position.
- After that turn “On” the key from the right side.
- Then press the “Green” operator button from left side to release the machine for use.
#2.Steps needed to operate the Bobcat Skid Steer
- To operate the bucket you can use the left and right foot controls that are available on the skid steers.
- In order to steer machine, you can use the control arms from the right and the left. The right arm control moves the right tires. The left arm control moves the left tires. Use both left and right arm controls together at the same time to move the machine in forward and backward direction.
#3.Turning Off the Bobcat Skid Steer
- From the top right corner turn the key to “Stop” or “Off” position.
- And then set your parking brake On.
- After that lift the roll cage up.
- And then using the handle safely exit the machine.

- It is important to check the area where you are operating Skid Steer. Once you get inside the machine, it will be difficult to see behind and to the sides of the machine.
- It is better not to overload the basket because a different machine has different weight capacities.
- You can evenly distribute the load on the attachment so the loader doesn’t tip over
- You should lift the loads slowly and evenly to keep the loader stable.
- Carry loads close to the ground, yet high enough to clear obstacles. When a load is carried too high, skid steer loaders are more likely to tip. It is especially important to carry the load as low as possible when turning, carrying a heavy load, traveling on a slope, or operating on rough surfaces.
- Do not drive across the hills and slowly to the slopes.
- Follow proper protection methods while operating the construction equipment. One should always use an ear protection, a hard hat, and safe footwear.
Categories Of Skid Steer
It can classify under three categories depending upon the area and the size of the project.
- Small Frame: When your frame size varies from 1,750 lbs., under 50 hp, then it falls under the category of the Small frame. This type of loader is normally used for landscaping, site development, final grading and to provide final soil layers over patios, sidewalks, and other areas. It can also be used on underground parking structures due to its low profile and relatively lightweight when compared to bigger and heavier loaders. - Medium Frame: If a frame size varies from 1,750-2,200 lbs., 50-70 hp then it falls under Medium frame project. This machine can be used when there is no room for large backhoes or excavators, and where a digger is not allowed to transit. It can be equipped with either tires or tracks making it very practical as it can drive over sidewalks, concrete plaza, asphalt and landscaped areas without subgrade rutting.
- Large Frame: If the frame size varies from Over 2,200 lbs., over 70 hp, then it comes under the large frame category. Larger version of the loader can be used to complete grading work, excavation, drilling and larger demolition work. Due to its quickness and relatively low profile, it can be moved around the site without the needs of having semis to move the equipment around the site.
Classification Of Skid Steer
Depending on their manufacturer’s operating capacity, skid-steer loaders are classified by the Associated Equipment Manufacturer and are broken down into the following divisions:
- Zero to 1,251 lbs.
- 1,251 to 1,350 lbs.
- 1,351 to 1,600 lbs.
- 1,601 to 1,750 lbs.
- 1,751 to 2,200 lbs.
- 2,201 to 2,700 lbs.
- 2,701 lbs. and above
